Chromium ore is a chromic spinel, and the main mineral group is FeO · Cr2O3. The actual mineral consists of a mixture of various spinels.

The main properties of Chromium ore

(1) Chromium ore has a good anti-alkaline slag effect and does not react with iron oxide, etc.; Therefore, in practical application, Chromium ore can avoid thermal chemical clay sand;

(2) In the process of molten metal casting, the Chromium ore itself undergoes solid sintering, which prevents the infiltration of the molten metal, thereby preventing mechanical sanding;

(3) The thermal conductivity of Chromium ore sand is several times greater than that of Silicon sand, which can increase the cooling speed of castings. Therefore, Chromium ore can play the role of external cold iron in practical applications;

(4) The most harmful impurity in chromite is carbonate(CaCO3 · MgCO3), which, in contact with high temperature metals, decomposes CO2, making it easy for the castings to produce fumaroles; In general, chromite containing carbonates is calcined at a high temperature of 900 °C -950 °C to decompose the carbonates therein.

(5) The particle size of Chromium ore can significantly affect the fire resistance of Chromium ore. In the past, it was believed that if the grains are coarsely spent, the finish on the surface of the castings will be reduced. However, the surface of the sand type and sand core made of Chromium ore sand is usually sprayed with a certain thickness of paint, so that the finish of the castings surface is hardly affected.

In general, the suitable grain size of the sand type used in the modeling of large steel casting parts is 40/70 mesh, and the type of sand grains selected for medium and small parts is 50/100 mesh. There are also some special cases: Some small water pump industries, taking into account economic factors, replaced zirconium sand with Chromium ore, and the Chromium ore purchased by these factories is very detailed, requiring 70/140 mesh, even 100/200 mesh, etc..
